Today's Tip: Identity Theft and Data Security

SITUATION

2005 was the worst cybercrime year ever! Over 55 million Americans were made vulnerable to identity theft by computer breaches and break-ins, starting in March with ChoicePoint's loss of 145,000 records and continuing through December with large losses by Marriott and Ford Motor Company. 2005 will go down in history as the year identity theft and data security became a nationwide concern, as no organization seemed immune; from Blockbuster, Time Warner and Iron Mountain to H&R Block, Bank of America and LexisNexis. Even U.C. Berkeley and Harvard University were unable to protect computers containing sensitive individual data. More details.

OPPORTUNITY

While concern is greater than ever, data protection bills in Congress appear stalled, leaving securing data and preventing ID theft in the hands of the the private sector. Some state laws mandate data protection, even suggesting encryption, but leave the details to the IT industry. Yet, even in the face of lawsuits and bad publicity, surveys show that most executives, while they believe data security is a top priority, are still not doing enough to protect it. THEY NEED YOUR HELP.

Organizations large and small in every industry segment are vulnerable. Help them start the new year by assessing and implementing data security measures.
Consumer's also need solutions to protect growing archives of personal data, including image, music and video files. In IDC's Home Data Protection, 2005 report, Robert Gray, research Vice President, Worldwide Storage Systems research states, "Consumers are not very different from commercial IT users. They have a lot of underprotected data and believe they should be doing something about it." Home Data Protection, 2005

SOLUTION

DataPort Removable Drive Enclosures Make any PC's hard drive quickly removable. DataPort's allow data to be taken offline and stored in a secure location. The preferred solution of the U.S. Government since 1989.
Encryption DataPort A high speed processor in this removable fully encrypts the entire disk drive (including boot sector, OS, temp and swap files) without degrading system performance. Available in DES & TDES, the best known and most widely tested algorithm in the world, with no known hacks.

enDRIVE IDS This PCI card with high-speed encryption processor makes upgrading and adding military-level data protection to any PC or MAC very easy and affordable. OS and application software independent. No confusing interface or drivers needed. Compatible with existing hardware and software.

KEY POINTS

DataPort solutions represent an opportunity for incremental, high-margin and recurring revenue.
Most "Security" solutions focus on protecting networks and servers from viruses and hackers but don't secure data at the workstation level.
Survey's show half of data crimes are inside jobs, highlighting the need for securing data at the desktop level.
