Today's Tip: Selling Disk-Based Backup
SITUATION
Having a reliable data backup and restore procedure in place can be a challenge for
small-to-medium sized businesses (SMB). While many CIO's regard the task of creating backups as a
nuisance, most executives and business owners today embrace the need to have a disaster recovery
plan in place for the inevitable disk failure, accidental file deletion or worse. Ideally, the
backup solutions used should be both easy to perform and reliable or customers will continue to put off this essential procedure.
OPPORTUNITY
Surveys show spending on storage is increasing with users ranking Disk-to-Disk (D2D)
backup and recovery in the top spot. Disk-based backup is gaining in popularity due to faster
backup/restore times and the falling prices for disk drives. Tape, however, isn't going away and
organizations that can show their customers how tape and D2D can co-exist as complimentary technologies have a tremendous revenue opportunity.

From a technical standpoint, the advantages of D2D backup are obvious:

Time to perform backup is often much shorter
Restore is many times faster, improving productivity
High accuracy of restored data
Improved cost and life expectancy
Easy to use and integrate with existing systems
Compatible with most backup software applications
