CRU-DataPort™ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DataPort?
A DataPort is a removable hard drive system designed to work with most standard computers. It consists of two pieces: a carrier and a frame. The frame fits in standard 5.25" drive bays, and the carrier holds a standard 3.5" wide hard drive. Each DataPort has a lock that also functions as a power switch.

My DataPort V “Plus” is making a loud beeping noise and the green LED is flashing. What should I do?
Your DataPort fan has stopped or slowed significantly. The fan is covered by your DataPort warranty. Please complete the technical support form so we can send you a new fan.

I lost my key.
CRU-DataPort sends out keys free of charge if customers lose them, or if they wear out. Please fill out the technical support form so we can send you a new key.

My lock does not work any longer.
With heavy use, your DataPort lock can wear out. CRU-DataPort will either issue a Return Material Authorization (RMA) to have the DataPort returned for repair or send out a new lock. Please complete the technical support form so we can arrange the replacement of your lock.

After I put my hard drive in the DataPort, the system does not recognize the hard drive anymore.

  • Please check to see if the key-lock is turned to the “ON” position: the key should be turned fully 90 degrees clockwise to turn on the power, and the green power light should be lit.
  • Ensure that the carrier is fully seated in the frame.
  • Confirm that the Master/Slave jumper settings are set correctly. Refer to the DataPort User Manual for details.
  • Verify that your computer’s operating system properly recognizes the drive. Refer to your computer’s documentation for system configuration information.

I bent one of the pins on my DataPort. Can I straighten it out and still use the DataPort?
CRU-DataPort strongly recommends that you return that DataPort to us for repair. If the pin does not properly connect, the DataPort can be damaged and you could lose data.

Can DataPorts be “hot-swapped”?
“Hot-swap” features are determined by the controller. If the controller is designed to provide a “hot-swap” environment, the DataPort will support “hot-swapping,” because the DataPort acts as a transparent device.

What is the maximum capacity hard drive that a DataPort supports?
DataPorts support any standard 3.5" half-height hard disk drive that fits into the DataPort carrier, regardless of its capacity. DataPorts support UDMA 6 and 48-bit addressing which is required for drives over 130 Gigabytes.
